Judge Solomy Balungi Bossa joined the Tribunal in September 2003 as ad litem Judge in Trial Chamber II.
Judge Bossa was born on in 1956. Prior to her appointment as Judge of the UNICTR, she served as Judge of the East African Court of Justice (2001-2006), and as Judge of the High Court of Uganda (1997 to date). She has steered and or been an active member of a number of International, Regional, East African and Ugandan human rights NGOs, including the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute, the International Commission of Jurists, the International Association of Women Judges, the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights, the East African Law Society, Kituo cha Katiba (East African Centre for Constitutional Development), Uganda Law Society, and the Legal Aid Clinics of the Uganda Law Society, FIDA (Uganda), and the Law Development Centre of Uganda.
Judge Bossa has founded non-profit organizations like Kituo cha Katiba, the East African Law Society, and the Uganda Network on Law, Ethics, HIV and Aids, to address human rights and governance issues.
She participated and later became a trainer in the first series of human rights training programs offered to eminent Judges from East African countries between 1999 and 2000, by the International Association of Women Judges. Judge Bossa has received numerous awards relating to her work from the international, regional and Ugandan legal fraternity.
